Music creation – „GarageBand all the way“

“I started making beats on my iPhone because I wasn’t about the excuse of ‘oh I don’t have this, so I’m just not gonna do it.’ So I went to this Guitar Center convention and bought this piece called the iRig which was $20 and initially I got it just to plug my guitar in my phone and see what apps have cool guitar effects and then I got this app called Akai MPC and that’s where I started chopping all my drums up and doing all my samples, strictly off the iPhone. Then I made a little more money, got a laptop, and made beats and songs off my laptop, but I still went back to this method. It was just raw and it’s home, you know?“

Steve Lacy: I just wanted to be in like a studio environment, I still recorded it, like, on my phone –

Matt Wilkinson: All on your phone?

SL: Yeah I had my manager buy studio time to record on my phone! *laughs*

[Matt: Amazing! *laughs*] Yeah, I dunno I just, I like the sound that um it brings – it’s kinda like what my sound is.

MW: Which apps are you using to make these songs?

SL: Oh GarageBand. [Matt: Wow.] GarageBand all the way. I programme some of the drums in Ableton but, everything else; bass, guitar and my vocals, are done in GarageBand.

MW: Theoretically you could be on tour in China or Korea or whatever and you could be in your hotel room and be like, yeah I got an idea – I’ve gotta go and do this.

SL: Yeah, yeah, it’s uh – this one time I recorded in Amsterdam, just like the hook *Kez* (? inaudible) and me (inaudible) were on tour in my like, room. I think it’s track 1, the first track actually, that hook I recorded – oh no wasn’t Amsterdam, it was Australia, Melbourne.
