Can the new iPad Pro tablets replace my laptop? Can they change the equation?

We won’t know definitively until that new operating system arrives. In the meantime, I can tell you the hardware is solidly improved. Most existing owners can wait until that iOS 11 upgrade hits before taking the plunge, though the upgrade from the 2015 12.9-incher to the 2017 version is more substantive than the step up from the 2016 9.7-incher to its 2017 10.5-inch replacement. Anyone with more modest tablet needs — those who don’t need to sketch on the screen with the Apple Pencil, for instance — should stick with the baseline 2017 iPad that was introduced back in March.

The New York Times

The most significant improvement to the iPad Pro is speed. The new tablet is notably faster: In speed tests run with the app Geekbench, the new iPad Pro was roughly 50 percent faster than its predecessor.

That means if you upgrade from an iPad older than last year’s model, you will get a tremendous speed increase. The speed boost makes the new iPad Pro better at intense tasks like juggling multiple apps, editing high-resolution photos and playing graphics-heavy games.

The new iPad Pros also include a higher screen refresh rate. That makes motion look smoother, which is noticeable when opening or closing apps and scrolling through documents or websites. It is also supposed to make some games look better, but as of this writing, game developers had yet to update their apps to support the higher refresh rate.

TechCrunch

With the iPad Pro, especially when it’s armed with iOS 11, it’s beginning to feel possible to see Apple in this world. The combination of custom silicon, a still robust and specifically attuned software ecosystem and a focus on security, Apple has everything it needs to make a strong showing here.

The Loop

The 10.5-inch really is the “Goldilocks”1 of iPads for me. Not too big, not too small, and really powerful in everything it does. I would highly recommend it.

The Verge

And yet, despite the fact that the meaningful tablet market has dwindled down to some Window 10 devices and the iPad – and despite the fact that the iPad itself has seen slowing sales – the company’s engineers are still moving full speed ahead and putting the most advanced technical hardware features it can come up with into this device. Apple is basically showing off at this point.

The iPad’s roomier 10.5-inch display can accommodate a full-sized keyboard onscreen as well as off, on Apple’s Smart Keyboard cover (though you can technically use any Bluetooth keyboard with it). This makes typing more comfortable and more laptop-like, and makes the iPad Pro more deserving of its „pro“ moniker.

That bigger screen is also brighter at 600 nits (lol, what a name for a spec) versus 500 in last year’s model, and has a new anti-reflection coating that makes the tablet easier to work with in direct sunlight, especially outside. I used it next to a bright window, and the iPad display was still perfectly visible, but started to heat up with the brightness turned up to max.
