Im Anschluss an die September-Keynote hat Apple Journalisten, Influencer, YouTuber und Co. mit Testgeräten der Apple Watch 5 ausgestattet. Soeben fiel das Embargo, so dass nun die ersten Reviews im Netz bereit stehen. Wir haben uns umgeguckt und euch ein paar der Testberichte zusammengeraten.

Alles in allem erhält die Apple Watch 5 von ihren Testern Bestnoten und wird als beste Smartwatch deklariert.

It is about time that Apple added an always-on screen to the Apple Watch Series 5, but that’s not the best thing about it. Nor is it the LTPO technology that enables it or the new compass or the noise meter or any single one of the features I’ve brought up in this review.

The best part of the Apple Watch is that I’m able to talk about those features at all. Every other smartwatch I have used in the past few years (and, reader, I have used a lot) has failed to cross very basic thresholds of usability. Some don’t last more than 12 hours, some can’t seem to open apps in fewer than 10 seconds, some are hard to navigate, and some have really buggy software.

Visually, Watch remains largely unchanged from previous generations, aside from the increased display size that arrived on the Series 4. The addition of the always-on display, however, addresses a longstanding issue with the device. When not in use, the Watch has traditionally been a blank screen. It seems like a massive oversight, but it’s also an understandable one. Battery life has always been a big concern with products this size, and keeping a screen on at all times is a surefire way to make sure you’ll run out of juice before the end of the day.

With the launch of Apple Watch Series 5, Apple may have cancelled the Series 4, but they’ve kept around the Series 3.

And, at $199, that’s entry-level iPad great. As much as Apple is pushing the latest to new levels of greatness, they’re now leaving really good, really useful versions of the same products at lower price points and making them accessible to even more people.

People who may not wanted to try it at full price or simply couldn’t afford to. Again, as much as some with breathlessly bemoan the lack of reasons to update year-over-year, most people in the world still haven’t bought a single Apple Watch.

The play here isn’t upgrading, it’s on-boarding, and Apple just gave a lot of people 199 reasons to think about the Watch for the first time. Especially as we enter the holidays.

For everyone else, they’re giving Apple Watch Series 4: the world’s best health and fitness tracker and motivator, connected communications and emergency contact band, and wearable computer platform that, yes, really does brings it all back full circle.

Apple Watch Series 5 is now the world’s best watch. Period.

Series 5’s always-on display solves my single biggest complaint about Apple Watch since day one. It’s not perfect, but it’s more than good enough. No other feature or improvement to Apple Watch to date has ever made me this happy. The watch face doesn’t really stay on on all the time — instead, when on previous Apple Watch generations the display would turn completely off, the watch face goes into a low-power mode. The display dims (but remains bright enough to be legible in most conditions), second hands go away, and you pretty much just see the hour and minutes. Raise your wrist and it fades in to full brightness. Notifications do not appear on screen while the watch is in its low-power state.

On paper the Apple Watch 5 is one of the most underwhelming upgrades Apple has ever unveiled. It’s essentially the Watch 4 – one of our best smartwatches, admittedly – with a compass, more cellular bands to call emergency services worldwide (a noble achievement, if not something people will rip it off the shelves for) and not much more.

Oh – except the screen now never switches off, dimming to an ambient, always-on display when you’re not raising it to look straight at it. Apple has fixed one of the biggest bugbears about its smartwatch, and that’s by far the biggest feature of this new device.

Für mich persönlich ist das AOD tatsächlich eine Bereicherung, muss ich weder bei der Arbeit noch beim Sport großartig die Watch aktivieren, sondern einfach nur noch raufschauen. Der Kompass ist nice to have, für mich aber nun nicht das Feature, welches mir fehlte. Apple liefert mit der Series 5 solide Arbeit ab, macht es den Kunden aber auch nicht leicht. Mit dem Always-on-Display bietet man sicherlich einer größeren Zielgruppe einen echten Mehrwert gegenüber der Series 4, und im direkten Vergleich in Sachen Gesundheit sieht die Series 5 gegenüber der 3 natürlich ebenso super aus.

Die spektakulärste Neuerung in diesem Jahr ist das Always-on-Display. Der Bildschirm bleibt somit immer an, auch wenn man nicht aktiv auf die Apple Watch schaut. Die Lösung für dieses Problem heißt LTPO. LTP-was? Die Buchstabenfolge steht für „Low Temperature Polycrystalline and Oxide Display“, auf deutsch Niedertemperatur-Polysilikon- und Oxid-Display. Vereinfacht gesagt ist das Display dadurch in der Lage, die Bildwiederholfrequenz automatisch von 60 auf nur noch ein Hertz herunterzuregeln und dadurch viel Strom einzusparen. Die Apple Watch ist das branchenweit einzige Produkt, dass diese Technologie einsetzt.

Seit vergangener Woche Dienstag lässt sich die Apple Watch im Apple Online Store vorbestellen. Der offizielle Verkaufsstart wird am Freitag gemeinsam mit dem iPhone 11 ( Pro) gefeiert.
