Apple Campus 2 erhält spezielle 5,5m lange Tische – aus einem Stück gefertigt

Der Apple Campus 2 befindet sich noch mitten im Bau. Erst vor wenigen Tagen haben wir euch ein Video gezeigt, welches den aktuellen Baufortschritt zeigt. Das gesamte Campus-Gelände wurde von Apple und im speziellen von Apples Design-Chef Jony Ive von Grund auf konzipiert. Auch zum Interior hat man sich bei Apple Gedanken gemacht. Unter anderm setzt Apple auf speziell angefertigte Tische.

Apple Campus 2 erhält spezielle 5,5m lange Tische

Apple hat den Kollegen von Design Milk (via Macrumors) einen Einblick in das Design des Apple Campus 2 gegeben. In erster Linie ging es um das Möbel-Design und speziell angefertigte Tische. Demnach hat Apple 500 Tischen bestellt, die speziell nach Apples Anforderungsprofil gefertigt werden. Diese sind rund 5,5m lang, 1,2m breit und wiegen 300kg.

Die Tische werden vom niederländischen Unternehmen Arco aus einem einzigen Stuck Holz gefertigt. Genau wie bei einem Skateboard sind die Kanten leicht gerundet. Die gesamte Oberfläche wirkt „nahtlos“.

The closest approximation that popped into my head was an enormous naked wood skate deck designed for a colossus Jony Ive. And if the length of all 500 tables inside Apple Campus 2 were combined, it would roughly equal the distance of the National Mall in Washington, DC.

These extra large Pod Island Tables by Arco are constructed from continuous sheets of solid Spesshart white oak sourced from the fairytale forests of Germany. There are no visible seams because of the company’s innovative manufacturing technique, which essentially peels away continuous single thin sheets of wood, which is then layered into a table top.

Apple wird die Tische auf jeder Ebene des Campus 2 platzieren. Sie sollen als offene Arbeitsstätte dienen, an denen Mitarbeiter gemeinsam an Apple Projekten arbeiten können. Das ursprüngliche Konzept stammt von Steve Jobs während seiner Zeit bei Pixar.

During a meeting to inspect the first prototype together with Apple and Foster+Partners, the question was raised: ‚but what if it was made out of a single piece? Can you achieve it?‘ They challenged us to push the boundaries of our craft, we got excited ourselves as well and started to investigate how to overcome the limitations inherent to the way we produce tables–not just here at Arco but for the entire furniture industry including our partners. Design, machinery, logistics, finding the right material… it all had to be reconsidered.

Sobald die Produktion abgeschlossen ist, werden die genanten Tische mit 300 weiteren Tischen 200 Bänken nach Cupertino transportiert und auf dem Campus 2 mit Kränen installiert.
